MIND OVER MATER - HOSPITAL BUILDING GOES LOW ENERGY
AT LOW COST
Part of the Mater Hospital redevelopment, the recently
completed Mater Orchard building is a first example of how to integrate
sustainable building strategies into a substantial building whilst
keeping extra cost to a minimum.
The brief included a requirement that the building could be easily
adapted as a step-down care facility in the long term linked to
the Mater Hospital. The building comprises 30 en suite bedrooms,
workrooms, offices, kitchen and ancillary accommodation and is designed
around sustainable low energy principles that will result in significantly
reduced energy usage (50-60% savings). The building was completed
in 2005.
